Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) & The Social Media Buttons by Infaweb
It is important to keep up to date with social trends when you want your website to rank in the search engines. The latest technique is the Social Media Button – Google’s plus one, Facebook’s like, Twitters tweet and so on. But what does this mean for SEO?
For the moment, it means you need to get involved, start getting the buttons on your site if you haven’t already and getting people clicking. It’s like getting a credit, someone is saying your site is creditable and they like it. The question is what weight does a Google +1 have or a Facebook like? Will it put you higher than your competitor in the rankings?
Google has launched its +1 button and has quickly incorporated it into all its tools. You can see it around the site and against search results. But does this mean links are old news and social credits are the way forward?
My thought is no, Search Engine Optimisation is about getting content to the top of the search engines for people to see. The search engines try their best to ensure the highest quality content gets to the top of the rankings so they use all methods available. This is all they can do to give their users good content and that is what the search engine is all about. Lots of people forget that a search engine is not there to promote goods and services; it is there to give content and information to people. For example at Infaweb we provide a service – SEO Edinburgh. It is no good talking about our service to get ranking, we need to talk about related topics and give information that people want to read. Just because we use it to promote our business and draw in potential customers is irrelevant. The key is content that people have rated, both socially and through links.
Encourage the links and push the social media. But don’t forget rule number one – never break the rules. If the search engines say don’t use unnatural links then don’t, just encourage natural ones.
Today’s top five tips:
1. Use social media buttons on your site
2. Ensure you have active social media accounts that are updated regularly
3. Add quality content, that has been optimised, to your site on a regular basis
4. Give people something to talk about – a cool app or a free gift. This will encourage talk on the social media sites and give people something to link to
5. Ensure your site has no duplicate content
